QBASIC GORILLAS Play the game

How to play

Everything you need to hit the other gorilla: controls, angle and power, the wind, and the three ways to play a match.

The goal

Two gorillas face each other across a skyline and take turns throwing bananas. A banana that touches the other gorilla, a building or the sun explodes. Hit the other gorilla and you win the round; land your banana in a building and you carve a hole that later shots can travel through. Win the number of rounds set for the match.

Controls

Angle and power

Angle is measured in degrees from the horizontal. Low angles send the banana flat and fast; high angles lob it high and slow. Power sets how hard it leaves the gorilla. The two work together: the same distance can be reached with a flat, powerful shot or with a high, gentle one, and which you want depends on what stands in the way.

There is no single correct answer. The useful habit is to change one thing at a time: if the banana lands short, add power or steepen the angle; if it sails over, do the opposite. Watch where it lands and correct from there.

The wind

Every round has a wind. The arrow in the readout shows its direction and strength. Wind pushes the banana sideways while it flies, and it matters most on long, high shots — exactly the shots that are hardest to judge. A strong tailwind can carry a gentle shot much further than you expect; a headwind will drop a powerful one short.

When the wind is strong, aim into it: if it blows from right to left, aim to the right of your target and let it come back. High lobs also spend longer in the air, so the wind has more time to act on them.

Buildings, holes and the sun

The skyline is not decoration. A banana that hits a building explodes there and blows a hole in it, which changes the shots that follow. You can tunnel through a tower to reach a gorilla hidden behind it, drop a banana down a shaft, or use a building as a shield and force the other player to find a new line.

The sun is solid: hit it and the shot is spent. Treat the top of the board as a wall.

Winning a match

A match is played to a set number of rounds — from one to seven, or no limit at all, which ends only when someone leaves. Each round ends when a gorilla is hit. Whoever takes the agreed number of rounds wins the match.

The three ways to play

  1. Against the CPU — pick a difficulty and play solo. The machine leads its shots over time, so it gets more dangerous the longer a match runs.
  2. Two players, one keyboard — pass the keyboard between turns. The classic way; also works on one phone, passed back and forth.
  3. Two players, two devices — start a match, get a code, and send it to the other player. They paste it in and land in your city, on your round, with your score. No account, no lobby.

Leaderboards, achievements and unlocks

Wins on the online leaderboard are stored under the nickname you choose; nothing else is asked. Twenty-four achievements unlock new taunts for the gorillas and special attacks you can spend during a match. Progress is kept in your own browser.
